Poostay, Edward; Aaron, Ira E. – School Psychology Review, 1982
From the perspective of reading specialists, factors contributing to reading difficulties include visual and auditory limitations, instructional and environmental problems, and emotional difficulties. A hierarchy of word recognition skills is presented. The usefulness of diagnosing children learning disabled or dyslexic is examined in the context…

Guthrie, Frances M.; Cunningham, Patricia M. – Reading Teacher, 1982
Reports that teaching educable mentally handicapped children to compare unknown words to words they already have in their sight vocabularies seems to improve their reading abilities. (FL)
Descriptors: Decoding (Reading), Elementary Education, Mild Mental Retardation, Reading Difficulties

Miller, Leon K. – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1981
This study was designed to provide evidence concerning hemispheric independence in the visual modality of children and adults. Words and letters were shown either singly or in pairs. Hemispheric independence occurred more frequently among children when letters, as opposed to words, were shown. Results are discussed in terms of developmental models…

Hughes, M. J. – Australian Journal of Mental Retardation, 1979
The relative ease of learning with Bliss symbols or words was investigated using four moderately retarded and four severely retarded children (ages 6 to 9 and 14 to 17, respectively) as Ss. It was found that Bliss symbols were the more easily learned and this was most evident among the severely retarded Ss. (Author/PHR)
Descriptors: Auditory Stimuli, Elementary Education, Exceptional Child Research, Moderate Mental Retardation

Lindsey, Jimmy D.; And Others – Journal of Reading, 1981
Describes two word-recognition activities and a cross-age tutoring program that have proven successful in developing poor readers' sight vocabulary. (MKM)
Descriptors: Cross Age Teaching, Kinesthetic Methods, Language Experience Approach, Reading Skills

Marlowe, Wendy; And Others – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1979
In a study 12 normal children and 12 reading disabled (word recognition difficulties) children (mean age 9.2 years) were compared for reading and listening comprehension to test whether disabled readers, given an auditory presentation, would show comprehension of material comparable to that of normal readers given visual presentation. (PHR)

Norton, Susan J.; And Others – Journal of Speech and Hearing Research, 1977
The paper reports the results of preliminary tests of the speechreading ability of a deaf blind adult who uses the Tadoma Method (speechreading based solely on vibrotactile information) for language acquisition and information. (Author/PHR)

de Bot, Kees; Paribakht, T-Sima; Wesche, Marjorie Bingham – Studies in Second Language Acquisition, 1997
Explores the relevance of a model for second language (L2) lexical organization and processing, with particular attention to its mental lexicon components, i.e., concepts, lemmas, and lexemes; and organization. Argues that the process of inferring the features of unknown words in a reading passage can be described in terms of lemma construction,…

Carlson, Jerry S.; Das, J. P. – Learning Disability Quarterly, 1997
Two studies evaluated the Process-Based Reading Enhancement Program (PREP) with 150 grade 4 economically disadvantaged children. Pre- and posttesting with the Word Attack and Word Identification subtests of the Woodcock Reading Mastery Tests-Revised found significant group-by-time interactions. Results support the efficacy of the PREP to improve…

Lovett, Maureen W.; Steinbach, Karen A. – Learning Disability Quarterly, 1997
Comparison of two word identification training programs with 122 severely reading disabled children in grades 2 through 6 found both the phonological and the strategy programs resulted in significant improvement in word identification and word attack skills and sizeable transfer-of-training effects. Children at each grade level made equivalent…

Defior, Sylvia; And Others – Reading and Writing: An Interdisciplinary Journal, 1996
Examines effects of several lexical and sublexical variables (lexical category and frequency, syllabic structure, word length) in reading acquisition in a transparent language--Spanish. Compares effects of variables in 140 normal and poor young readers. Finds that all variables produced a significant effect on the number of errors made by the…

Goldinger, Stephen D. – Language and Cognitive Processes, 1996
Emphasizes that auditory lexical decision has wide applicability and that the paradigm is currently used to study basic processes in word recognition, the nature of the mental lexicon, effects of word frequency, neighbor effects and various other phenomena of isolated word perception. Article reviews the strengths and weaknesses of this task. (54…

Ehri, Linnea C.; Saltmarsh, Jill – Reading and Writing: An Interdisciplinary Journal, 1995
Gives advanced and novice readers in grade one and older disabled readers nonword reading and spelling tasks. Finds that disabled readers read as many nonwords and spelled as many words as beginning readers, indicating equivalent alphabetic knowledge. Finds that disabled readers took significantly more trials to read 16 target words, indicating…

Yang, Lynne R.; Givon, T. – Studies in Second Language Acquisition, 1997
Examines the effects of simplified input in early second language (L2) acquisition of English by experimentally manipulating language input to two groups of learners and then assessing their acquisition longitudinally within a controlled laboratory setting. Findings reveal that the dual task of acquiring vocabulary and grammar does not hinder…
