Kosslyn, Stephen M.; And Others – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Learning and Memory, 1976
Investigates whether imagery and verbal encoding use different processing mechanisms and attempts to discover whether the processes underlying the use of imagery to retain words are also involved in like-modality perception. (Author/RK)
Descriptors: Codification, Experimental Psychology, Experiments, Imagery

Olton, David S.; Samuelson, Robert J. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Animal Behavior Processes, 1976
Investigates memory capacity in rats for information about spatial location and provides information about some of the characteristics of the storage process used in this memory. (Author/RK)
Descriptors: Animal Behavior, Data Analysis, Experimental Psychology, Laboratory Experiments

Heth, C. Donald – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Animal Behavior Processes, 1976
Four experiments examined the possibility that the outcome of simultaneous and backward fear conditioning procedures might depend upon the number of conditioned stimulus-unconditioned stimulus pairings. (Editor/RK)
Descriptors: Animal Behavior, Conditioning, Experimental Psychology, Fear
Argyle, Michael; Graham, Jean Ann – Environmental Psychology and Nonverbal Behavior, 1976
Gaze at objects, another person, and background was measured for 15 days which constituted five different experimental groups in which task and situational factors were varied. Background stimuli had an unreliable effect on gaze. A simple object attracted a great deal of gaze and reduced gaze at the other person. (Author)
Descriptors: Environmental Influences, Experimental Psychology, Interaction Process Analysis, Nonverbal Communication
Horowitz, Leonard M.; Manelis, Leon – Journal of Experimental Psychology, 1973
These experiments contrasted recognition with cued recall. It was learned that cued recall was consistently better for idioms than for phrases. (Author/RK)
Descriptors: Adjectives, College Students, Cues, Experimental Psychology
Checkosky, Stephen F.; Whitlock, Dean – Journal of Experimental Psychology, 1973
The general purpose of the present experiment was to investigate sources of the effect of pattern goodness on human performance. (Author)
Descriptors: Analysis of Variance, College Students, Diagrams, Experimental Psychology
Carey, Stephen T. – Journal of Experimental Psychology, 1973
The present study was designed to investigate the PI buildup and release effect using a delayed recognition testing procedure, which by avoiding the use of lures from previous trials obviates the response competition component of interference. (Author)
Descriptors: Analysis of Variance, Experimental Psychology, Incidental Learning, Inhibition
Shepp, Bryan E.; Adams, Marilyn J. – Journal of Experimental Psychology, 1973
Second-grade children were trained on an optional shift task in order to assess the relation between the amount of overtraining and (a) the type of shift executed by Ss, and (b) the breadth of learning. (Editor)
Descriptors: Analysis of Variance, Cues, Discrimination Learning, Elementary School Students
Massaro, Dominic W. – Journal of Experimental Psychology, 1974
The primary purpose of this study was to determine the size of the sound stimulus employed in the first stage of speech recognition. (Author)
Descriptors: Auditory Perception, College Students, Diagrams, Experimental Psychology
Gotz, Axel; Jacoby, Larry L. – Journal of Experimental Psychology, 1974
Retention effects of retrieval practice and of predictability of recall delay were investigated in 2 experiments. (Editor)
Descriptors: College Students, Cues, Experimental Psychology, Memory
Ellis, Henry C.; And Others – Journal of Experimental Psychology, 1974
Two experiments examined the role of meaningfulness (m), perceptual grouping, and organizational factors in recognition memory of consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) trigram stimuli. (Editor)
Descriptors: College Students, Data Analysis, Diagrams, Experimental Psychology
Okada, Ronald; Carey, Stephen T. – Journal of Experimental Psychology, 1974
The present studies were designed to compare whole-list reproduction (Experiment 1) and whole-list relearning (Experiment 11) for experimental and control Ss after each group had learned its respective part list. (Author)
Descriptors: Diagrams, Experimental Psychology, Learning Processes, Psychological Studies
Dewing, Kathleen; Hetherington, Paul – Journal of Experimental Psychology, 1974
The aim of the present study was to extend the findings relating to the role of imagery in verbal learning and retrieval to the solution of anagrams. (Author)
Descriptors: College Students, Experimental Psychology, Imagery, Psychological Studies
Sims-Knight, Judith E.; Lipsitt, Lewis P. – Journal of Experimental Psychology, 1974
The present study attempted to determine whether young children can make implicit chains involving images and words. (Author)
Descriptors: Children, Eidetic Imagery, Experimental Psychology, Paired Associate Learning

Simon, Herbert A. – Science, 1974
Examines earlier studies relating to human memory, extracts estimates of parameters that appear to be crucial to performance in complex tasks, and illustrates how these parameter values predict behavior in a range of laboratory situations. (JR)
Descriptors: Behavioral Sciences, Cognitive Processes, Experimental Psychology, Memory
