Becker, Curtis A.; Killion, Thomas H. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, 1977
Meyer, Schvaneveldt, and Ruddy report that semantic context has a larger effect on visually degraded words than on undegraded words. Degrading stimuli takes place by superimposing a dot pattern over letters thereby slowing information processing. Four experiments explore alternative explanations of this research finding. (Editor/RK)

Tweney, Ryan D.; And Others – Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, 1977
Although the linguistic properties of sign languages, and of American Sign Language (ASL) in particular, are beginning to be studied, little work has been done on the functional properties of sign. Four experiments are reported in which signed messages were subjected to varying amounts of disruption using repetitive temporal interruption. Results…

Rabinowitz, Jan C.; And Others – Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, 1977
The assumption that recall and recognition involve different processes has been attacked and defended in recent years on both theoretical and empirical grounds. This research extends the notion that retrieval processes are operative in recognition as well as in free recall of individual words. (Editor/RK)
Descriptors: Experimental Psychology, Flow Charts, Information Retrieval, Memory
Guenther, R. Kim; Klatzky, Roberta L. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Learning and Memory, 1977
These experiments consider similarities and differences between classifications of pictorial and verbal stimuli in order to investigate whether the kinds of information used differ depending on the stimulus class. Three hypotheses regarding the information used in picture and word classification were evaluated. (Author/RK)
Descriptors: Codification, Experimental Psychology, Experiments, Hypothesis Testing
Pezdek, Kathy – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Learning and Memory, 1977
This research attempts to determine whether integration of information occurs when the information is presented partly in the verbal modality and partly in the pictorial modality; in other words, does cross-modality integration occur? (Author/RK)
Descriptors: Experimental Psychology, Experiments, Illustrations, Information Processing
Park, Denise Cortis; Whitten, William B., LLL – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Learning and Memory, 1977
This research examines how pictures differ from sentences on important memory dimensions, with specific reference to Bransford and Franks (1971). (Author/RK)
Descriptors: Codification, Experimental Psychology, Flow Charts, Illustrations
Mewaldt, Steven P.; Hinrichs, James V. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Learning and Memory, 1977
Inference and response bias effects in recall from short-term memory were tested in six memory and pseudomemory experiments. Factors known to influence the Ranschburg effect--reduced recall of repeated items--were manipulated in memory and in pseudomemory conditions permitting no specific item retention. (Editor)
Descriptors: Experimental Psychology, Experiments, Guessing (Tests), Information Processing

Rescorla, Robert A.; Furrow, David R. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Animal Behavior Processes, 1977
Three experiments carried out second-order Pavlovian conditioning using either similar or dissimilar first-and second-order stimuli. All three experiments were designed to identify the effects of similarity upon conditioning as distinct from its effects upon sensitization or stimulus generalization. (Editor/RK)
Descriptors: Animal Behavior, Association Measures, Classical Conditioning, Conditioning
Coltheart, Veronika – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Learning and Memory, 1977
Three experiments investigated the nature of false recognition errors made after incidental learning that required acoustic or semantic analysis. (Editor)
Descriptors: Experimental Psychology, Experiments, Incidental Learning, Information Processing

Maki, William S., Jr.; And Others – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Animal Behavior Processes, 1977
This research used tasks analogous to Delayed Matching-to-Sample tasks to study pigeons' Short Term Memory for responses and reinforcers, as well as for more conventional stimuli. The broad question is whether stimulus, response, and reinforcer memories are all influenced in the same way by the same independent variables. (Author/RK)
Descriptors: Animal Behavior, Data Analysis, Experimental Psychology, Experiments

Henderson, Sheila A. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, 1977
Three experiments examined the role of various sources of feedback in the development and maintenance of a complex ballistic skill, dart throwing, using extended practice. (Editor)
Descriptors: Experimental Psychology, Experiments, Feedback, Flow Charts

Mynatt, Barbee T. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, 1977
Reading reaction time (RT) to visual stimuli was shown to vary according to the nature of simultaneous auditory stimuli. A two-stage model was proposed to explain the results in which parallel processing of simultaneous input occurs prior to a decision-making stage. (Editor)
Descriptors: Attention, Auditory Stimuli, Experimental Psychology, Experiments

Proctor, Robert W.; Fisicaro, Sebastiano A. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, 1977
In recent years several models of human-information processing have been proposed in which the central component is a limited-capacity processing system. One line of research has focused on the question of which stages in the processing sequence require capacity in this system. This research is concerned with time and capacity demands in…

Fischhoff, Baruch – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, 1977
There are many tasks in which people are called on to disregard information that they have already processed. Dealing with inadmissible evidence in a courtroom setting, second-guessing the past, etc. This research investigates such difficulties in a general form, using almanac-type questions. (Editor/RK)
Descriptors: Experimental Psychology, Experiments, Flow Charts, Information Processing

Przeorek, Janusz; And Others – Teaching of Psychology, 1984
Describes three computer programs designed to control and execute standard methods for paired associate learning. They can be used in classroom demonstrations or laboratory exercises in experimental psychology. (RM)
