Background: This study describes a new caregiver-report assessment, the Sensory Experiences Questionnaire (SEQ), and explicates the nature of sensory patterns of hyper- and hyporesponsiveness, their prevalence, and developmental correlates in autism relative to comparison groups. Kasari, Connie; Freeman, Stephanny F. N.; Huges, Margaret A. – American Journal on Mental Retardation, 2001
Findings of three studies indicate that young children with Down syndrome perform similarly to typical controls matched on mental ages (MAs) of approximately 3 years. However, by developmental age of 4 years, children with Down syndrome performed worse than both MA-matched typical children and children with non-Down syndrome types of mental…

Berry, P.; And Others – Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry and Allied Disciplines, 1984
A lock box for investigating preschool children's problem-solving behavior was used with 17 Down syndrome children and 17 normal children, all of whom had a mean age of 37.4 months. Small children showed greater competence, more organization, and less perseverance than those with Down syndrome. (RH)

Sutherland, Peter – Educational Studies, 1983
Among a cross-sectional sample of pupils of both sexes in Britain evidence showed accelerations in intellectual development at 7 and 16 years of age. Acceleration at the younger age is a new finding. Age, verbal IQ, teacher's estimate, and social class were all significant predictors of intellectual development. (Author/IS)

Rieder, Carolyn; Cicchetti, Dante – Developmental Psychology, 1989
Examined the relation between a history of maltreatment and cognitive control functioning in two groups of preschool and early school-age maltreated and nonmaltreated children. Maltreated children showed developmentally impaired cognitive control functioning on a number of tasks. (RH)

Comparison of 28 young children with autism, 29 children with other developmental disabilities, and 28 typical children found that autistic children were significantly less compliant with parental prohibitions than were control groups. This behavior correlated with chronological age, not with mental age, language development, or parental behavior.…

Hastings, Richard P.; Beck, Alexandra; Daley, Dave; Hill, Christopher – Research in Developmental Disabilities: A Multidisciplinary Journal, 2005
Existing research suggests that children with intellectual disabilities are at increased risk for ADHD, and that the symptoms of the disorder might successfully be treated with stimulant drugs. However, there has been little exploration of ADHD symptoms and their correlates in children with intellectual disabilities. Analyses of three samples of…

Seibert, Jeffrey M.; And Others – Merrill-Palmer Quarterly, 1986
Tests hypotheses that social and object skills can be equated for cognitive complexity and that correlations between measures organized according to levels are high for all samples spanning the developmental range. Cognitive levels of both object and social skills were assessed for 50 normal and 34 handicapped children. Hypotheses were confirmed.…
