Lescht, Erica; Dickey, Michael Walsh; Stockbridge, Melissa D.; Ratner, Nan Bernstein – Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research, 2022
Purpose: Language abilities have long been thought to be weaker in adults who stutter (AWS) compared to adults who do not stutter (AWNS). However, it is unknown whether modality affects language performance by AWS in time pressure situations. This study aimed to examine lexical access and retrieval abilities of AWS in oral and typed modes. Method:…

Feller, Daniel P.; Talwar, Amani; Greenberg, Daphne; Kopatich, Ryan D.; Magliano, Joseph P. – Journal of Research in Reading, 2023
Background: A significant portion of adults struggle to read at a basic level. Word reading (defined here as decoding and word recognition) appears to play a pivotal role for this population of readers; however, less is known about how word reading relates to other important semantic processes (e.g., vocabulary, sentence processing) known to…

Artiunian, Vardan; Lopukhina, Anastasiya – Journal of Child Language, 2020
This study investigates how "phonological neighborhood density" (PND) affects word production and recognition in 4-to-6-year-old Russian children in comparison to adults. Previous experiments with English-speaking adults showed that a dense neighborhood facilitated word production but inhibited recognition whereas a sparse neighborhood…

Lin, Candise Y.; Wang, Min; Newman, Rochelle S.; Li, Chuchu – Journal of Research in Reading, 2018
Background: This study examined the development of stress sensitivity and its relationship with word reading. Previous research has rarely measured phoneme and stress sensitivity in the same task, making a direct comparison of the contribution between the two in reading development difficult. Methods: Participants were native English-speaking…

Edelsky, Carole; Muina, Virginia – Journal of Child Language, 1977
Ability to distinguish "ask" and "tell" in Spanish was studied with five groups of native Spanish speakers: adults, 7- and 10-year-olds in a full bilingual school and 7- and 10-year-olds in a non-total bilingual school. Increased age, bilingual schooling and presence of contextual clues enhanced performance. (CHK)

Kaye, Daniel B.; And Others – Intelligence, 1987
Two experiments were conducted to study one facet of verbal intelligence--the ability of adolescents and adults to use a lexical decomposition strategy to define prefixed words. Subjects in grades 8, 10, 11, and college were given a multiple-choice vocabulary test. Results provided partial support for a theory of internal context use. (Author/LMO)
