Countless Teachers are ruining their voices because they lack the proper training in speech habits. (CK)
Descriptors: Speech Instruction, Teachers, Voice Disorders
Awan, Shaheen N.; Alphonso, Vania A. – Clinical Linguistics & Phonetics, 2007
The purpose of this study was to provide information concerning the possible early effects of smoking on measures of respiratory capacity and control in young adult female smokers vs. nonsmokers. In particular, maximum performance test results (vital capacity and maximum phonation time) and measures of air pressures and airflows during voiceless,…

McKinnon, David H.; McLeod, Sharynne; Reilly, Sheena – Language, Speech, and Hearing Services in Schools, 2007
Purpose: The aims of this study were threefold: to report teachers' estimates of the prevalence of speech disorders (specifically, stuttering, voice, and speech-sound disorders); to consider correspondence between the prevalence of speech disorders and gender, grade level, and socioeconomic status; and to describe the level of support provided to…

Pentz, Arthur L., Jr. – American Journal of Mental Deficiency, 1987
The sustained vowel sounds of 14 noninstitutionalized 7- to 10-year-old children with Down's syndrome were analyzed acoustically for vowel formant amplitude levels. The subjects with Down's syndrome had formant amplitude intensity levels significantly lower than those of a similar group of speakers without Down's syndrome. (Author/DB)
Descriptors: Acoustics, Downs Syndrome, Voice Disorders, Vowels

Pentz, Arthur L., Jr.; Gilbert, Harvey R. – American Journal of Mental Deficiency, 1983
Analysis of the voice quality of 14 7- to 10-year-old Down's syndrome children revealed significantly greater frequency and amplitude perturbations and spectral noise-to-harmonic component ratios compared to ratings for nonretarded subjects. (Author/CL)
Descriptors: Downs Syndrome, Speech Handicaps, Voice Disorders

Andrews, Maya L.; And Others – Language, Speech, and Hearing Services in Schools, 1984
The paper presents an approach to voice therapy programing for young children who are hypernasal. Some general principles underlying the approach are presented and discussed, including use of language patterns appropriate to the child's age and cognitive and linguistic development. (Author/CL)
Descriptors: Speech Therapy, Voice Disorders, Young Children
Cooper, Morton – Peabody J Educ, 1970
Many teachers suffer from laryngeal and pharyngeal tensions because they do not know how to properly regulate the pitch and tone of their voice in the classroom. Through proper training, this fault can be corrected. (CK)
Descriptors: Teacher Education, Teacher Welfare, Voice Disorders
Cooper, Morton – Grade Teacher, 1970
Descriptors: Speech Instruction, Teacher Improvement, Voice Disorders

Monsen, Randall B. – American Annals of the Deaf, 1983
Voice quality and speech intelligibility of 30 deaf adolescents were related to articulatory and acoustic variables. Voice quality and speech intelligibility were closely related and abnormalities of both phonation and articulation had a mutual negative effect on intelligibility and voice quality. (Author/CL)
Descriptors: Adolescents, Articulation (Speech), Deafness, Voice Disorders

Smith, Marshall E.; And Others – Journal of Speech and Hearing Research, 1992
A theoretical four-mass model of the larynx was developed to simulate laryngeal biomechanical behavior and used to evaluate states of asymmetric laryngeal vibration. Simulations of laryngeal paralyses were compared with data on glottal vibration in observed laryngeal function. (Author/JDD)
Descriptors: Biomechanics, Models, Physiology, Simulation

Roy, Nelson; Merrill, Ray M.; Thibeault, Susan; Gray, Steven D.; Smith, Elaine M. – Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research, 2004
To examine the frequency and adverse effects of voice disorders on job performance and attendance in teachers and the general population, 2,401 participants from Iowa and Utah ([n.sub.1] = 1,243 teachers and [n.sub.2] = 1,279 nonteachers) were randomly selected and were interviewed by telephone using a voice disorder questionnaire. Teachers were…

Baker, Julie; Ryalls, Jack; Brice, Alejandro; Whiteside, Janet – Clinical Linguistics & Phonetics, 2007
In the present study, voice onset time (VOT) measurements were compared between a group of individuals with moderate Alzheimer's disease (AD) and a group of healthy age- and gender-matched peers. Participants read a list of consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) words, which included the six stop consonants. The VOT measurements were made from…

Whitehead, Robert L.; Whitehead, Brenda H. – Journal of Communication Disorders, 1985
The investigation calculated signal-to-noise ratio (S/N ratio) and average fundamental vocal frequency (Fo) for 20 hearing impaired young adults and correlated acoustic measures with degree of perceived vocal tension/harshness. Results indicated significant correlations between S/N ratios and degree of perceived vocal tension/harshness, as well as…
