Analysis of data on 3,182 Swedish students compared those in workplace training arranged by their school with those trained in jobs acquired on their own (market governed). Reasons why so few (approximately 16%) of former students from Swedish schools for the mentally retarded find employment without government subsidy are explored through interviews with 12 teachers, 2 parents, 11 vocational instructors, and 14 employer representatives.
