The author could have chosen any ancient symbolic language, such as Egyptian or Pre-Columbian, but being from Denmark, she developed a unit that would introduce American students to artwork familiar to northern Europeans. Looking at examples of ancient art from Denmark and Sweden, students were to think about the use of symbols in ancient time and develop symbols depicting life experiences. This article presents an activity where students will make Hallristningar, unique stone carvings of the Scandinavian Bronze Age people, through relief printing. Most Hallristningar involved making marks into a rock surface with a harder stone. This activity is aimed at: (1) learning about the ancient Northern European petroglyphic art, "Hallristningar"; (2) contemplating the use of symbols in ancient times and develop their own symbols depicting life experiences; (3) learning artists often simplify images to express ideas; (4) creating a balance of positive and negative spaces; and (5) developing their own symbolic language and feature it in a relief print.
