The Influence of Child Sexual Abuse on Preschool-Aged Children
Early Child Development and Care, v190 n12 p1833-1843 2020
Child Sexual Abuse (CSA) is a social plight that affects the lives of roughly 400,000 children annually within the United States. However, while a significant body of research exists conceptualizing the impacts of CSA on adolescent-aged children, little research is available to synthesize the impacts of CSA on preschool-aged children, particularly in relation to their social-emotional well-being and educational experiences. This literature review asks the question: What are the impacts of CSA on preschool-aged children? Research concluded that preschool-aged victims of CSA are likely to experience: (i) difficulty sleeping; (ii) clinical levels of dissociation; (iii) difficulty regulating their emotions; and (iv) poor emotional attachments.
