Loe, David C. – Academic Therapy, 1978
Twenty learning disabled (LD) students (9-12 years) with normal verbal IQs performed better on elaborated paired associate learning tasks than 20 LD Ss (10-12 years) with lower verbal IQs. (CL)
Descriptors: Elementary Education, Exceptional Child Research, Learning Disabilities, Mediation Theory
Anderson, Richard C.; Pichert, James W. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1978
In these studies, people recalled additional, previously unrecalled information from stories following instruction to take a new perspective. The data clearly show the operation of retrieval processes independent from encoding processes. (SW)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Cues, Language Processing, Language Research

Paris, Scott G. – Developmental Psychology, 1978
Presents a study of age differences in memory organization during repeated recall tasks. Second and sixth grade children served as subjects. (BD)
Descriptors: Advance Organizers, Age Differences, Cognitive Processes, Elementary School Students

Bauer, Richard H. – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1977
This experiment examined the possibility that deficient rehearsal is responsible for poor learning in children with learning disabilities by comparing single-trial immediate and delayed free recall of learning disabled children and children with no such disability. (Author/SB)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Elementary School Students, Learning Disabilities, Mediation Theory
Corbett, Albert T. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1977
Retrieval dynamics in recognition memory for paired-associates learned by rote repetition or visual imagery mnemonics are studied with Reed's response signal method. The use of visual imagery resulted in higher asymptotic accuracy as expected, but somewhat slower retrieval dynamics initially. (Author/RM)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Language Processing, Memory, Mnemonics
Hasher, Lynn; Chromiak, Walter – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1977
Aspects of the processing of frequency information were investigated in two studies. The first showed that second graders were as prepared to process frequency differences as adults. The second showed that practice at frequency counting does not improve the performance of young adults and neither does feedback regarding earlier performance.…

Aaronson, Doris; And Others – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1977
This study deals with the patterns of word-by-word reading times over a sentence when the subject must code the linguistic information sufficiently for immediate verbatim recall. A class of quantitative models is considered that would account for reading times at phrase breaks. (Author/RM)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Language Processing, Models, Psycholinguistics

McGeehan, Deborah L.; Cantor, Joan H. – Developmental Psychology, 1977
In a combined verbal and motor paired-associate task, children in kindergarten, second grade, and fourth grade learned nonsense names and spatial responses for three random shapes. Results showed evidence for mediation at all three age levels and increased mediational effects with age. (Author/JMB)
Descriptors: Age Differences, Elementary Education, Elementary School Students, Mediation Theory

Craig, Holly K.; Gallagher, Tanya M. – Journal of Speech and Hearing Research, 1986
The relationship between interactive play and the frequency of related responding to comments was investigated within the dyadic interactions between a language impaired 4-year-old and 4 normal language users. While the frequency of related responses was variable for the subject, the frequencies of related responses of normal children were…

Brutten, Sheila R.; And Others – Language Learning, 1985
Describes a study in which measures of musical ability (pitch, loudness, and rhythm), auditory discrimination, and memory were used to account for variance in attained English as a second language (ESL) oral proficiency. Proposes research programs to determine whether training in musical abilities might be useful to ESL instruction. (SED)
Descriptors: Auditory Discrimination, English (Second Language), Language Proficiency, Music
Wallace, William P. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Learning and Memory, 1976
Descriptors: Discrimination Learning, Experimental Psychology, Experiments, Flow Charts
Huttenlocher, Janellen; Newcombe, Nora – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1976
Reports on 5 experiments investigating the effect of blocking words according to semantic category on ordered recall in adults and young children. (Author/RM)
Descriptors: Adults, Children, Cognitive Processes, Language Processing
Moscovitch, Morris; Craik, Fergus I. M. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1976
Three experiments were conducted to examine the relations between retrieval and encoding in a levels-of-processing framework. (Author/RM)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Cues, Language Processing, Language Research

Lovelace, Eugene A.; Bansal, Leslie – American Journal of Psychology, 1973
The present paper reports the results of four experiments on verbal discrimination learning. These experiments manipulated the associative properties and the language frequency of stimuli, as well as the pairings of "right' and "wrong' items within a list. (Author)
Descriptors: College Students, Discrimination Learning, Language Usage, Methods

Whitely, Susan Embretson; Taylor, Arthur M. – American Journal of Mental Deficiency, 1973
Descriptors: Exceptional Child Research, Junior High School Students, Mental Retardation, Mild Mental Retardation
