Assessing Corporate Impacts of Cyber Training on Email Phishing Attacks
Giovanni Bryan Jamal McKinney
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Southern Nazarene University
A high number of cyber breaches in organizations occur as a result of email phishing attempts. Research has shown that cyber education has a positive impact in user awareness of attack methods resulting in the reduction of compromises from email phishing attempts. However, in some instances, cyber education does not have a positive impact on the reduction of successful email phishing attempts. In some industries, the positive correlation is, in fact, drastically reduced. The purpose of this quantitative comparative study was to assess the impact of cybersecurity training on employee simulated email phishing attempts in a central southwest mid-sized municipality as measured in failure rates overall and failure rates measured within the context of three subgroups: management, non-management, and public safety groups. This study was viewed through the lens of General Systems Theory. A pre-training/post-training design was applied and a chi-square test was used to compare the failure rates overall and among the three subgroups while controlling for enhanced safety protocols between the subgroups. Data analysis for four research questions revealed that overall the cybersecurity training was statistically significant in reducing the number of employee simulated phishing failures. This could be attributed to a culture of accountability. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
