Stanley L. Leone Jr
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Grand Canyon University
The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to explore how urban high school teachers describe their understanding and navigation of workplace pressures that are associated with teacher burnout. Maslach's multidimensional burnout theory served as a framework for two research questions: (1) How do urban high school teachers describe their understanding of workplace pressures that are associated with teacher burnout? (2) How do urban high school teachers describe their navigation of workplace pressures that are associated with teacher burnout? Purposive sampling was used to recruit 18 public high school teachers. Data were collected from 11 semi-structured interviews, two focus groups of two participants, and one focus group of three participants. A thematic analysis of inductive coding generated four themes for research question 1: (1) Teacher stress. (2) Quiet quitting. (3) Workplace relationships. (4) Systems design. Analysis generated two themes for research question 2: (1) Teacher navigation of workplace pressures. (2) Quiet quitting. This study advanced understanding of how teachers understand and navigate workplace pressures that are associated with teacher burnout, with multiple aspects of workplace pressures being associated with the experience of workplace relationships. Findings may be applied to development, selection, and administration of teacher professional development in public education.
