During July and August 1975, an attitude survey was conducted in the predominantly black residential areas of Roxbury, Dorchester, Mattapan, and the South end of Boston with parents of children in the Boston public schools. The survey was conducted by staff at the Freedom House Institute for Schools and Education. The aim of the study was to identify concerns and service needs of black children and parents relative to school desegregation in Boston. This survey was conducted primarily through a system of telephone interviews. Over 200 black parents were surveyed. The survey questionnaire consisted of 14 questions, which fall into five categories: (1) general information, (2) parental assessments of Phase I desegregation, (3) perceived needs related to desegregation and the quality of service delivery in relation to those needs, (4) parental attitudes toward desegregation, and (5) interest of parents in the informational services and activities provided by the institute. The findings indicate widespread ambivalence among black parents about the strategies employed to desegregate the public schools, but an underlying belief that school desegregation as a principle should be adhered to. This study revealed the strength of the black community's commitment to desegregation. (Author/JM)
