Teaching materials for a comprehensive and integrated study of Mexico at the elementary level are presented. Emphasis throughout is on developing cross-cultural comparisons between Hermosillo and its sister city, Phoenix, for whom the program was created. Mexican geography, history, current events, politics, art, entertainment, education, people, language, resources, and food are examined in 29 units, which are arranged alphabetically by title of their lead story. The format throughout is the same. In each lesson one or more high interest stories convey essential information, and a set of learning activities measure understanding and application of this knowledge. To maintain student attention, stories are presented in a variety of forms, such as news articles, biographies, legends, and advertisements. Varied activities include assignments such as word games, map exercises, drawing, and reports. Active, hands-on projects are emphasized. Students are challenged to survive the desert, develop a TV show, participate in field trips, conduct interviews, and cook meals. Effort is made in all activities to incorporate interdisciplinary skills, and each unit is keyed to Arizona basic skills guidelines. Answer keys, an appendix comparing American-Mexican history, and an 11-page bibliography are included. (LP)
