English-Khmer Dictionary. Yale Linguistic Series.
Huffman, Franklin E.; Proum, Im
The main purpose of this dictionary is to provide a corpus of basic words and phrases in standard Khmer useful for Western students of Khmer. The dictionary contains 40,000 English entries and subentries. Subentries were chosen to reflect not only the semantic structure of English, but also the semantic structure and content of Khmer. The second objective of the dictionary is to provide the first comprehensive English-Khmer dictionary for Khmer students learning English. The third objective is to provide a research tool for linguists, philologists, and other scholars interested in the study of the Khmer language. In format this is a context dictionary, with clarifying context for every different meaning of the English entry being translated. Following the introduction, which includes the scope and format of the dictionary, English and Khmer abbreviations are given. The body of the dictionary is only English-Khmer. Appendix A, on the transcription system for standard Khmer, includes sections on consonants, vowels, subscript consonants, and numerals. Appendix B concerns the transliteration system for Khmer script. A bibliography is also included. (Author/NCR)
