Canada: A Vast Environment. Understanding the Canadian Environment.
Brown, Rex B.; And Others
One of a series of student booklets on the Canadian environment, this unit covers the national and regional transportation systems in Canada and a comparative study of six localities. Student groups adopt another community somewhere in Canada and plan a trip from there to their home town. In the course of their activities, they learn about their home town, their adopted community, Canada, and different modes of travel. Following an introductory chapter, 12 sections are presented. In sections 2-4, students examine Canada's major transportation systems, learn to read transportation schedules, and investigate transportation systems in their home town. In the next section, students plan a family reunion, organize the trip, and record expenses. In sections 6 and 7, students compare the position, climate, and growing season of seven communities and then describe the community they consider most desirable. Sections 8 through 13 contain community profiles and maps for six communities: Terrace, British Columbia; Joe Batt's Arm, Newfoundland; Saint-Lambert, Quebec; Port Hope, Ontario; Weyburn, Saskatchewan; and Hay River, Northwest Territories.
