Wang, Jui H. – Science, 1970
Proposes a molecular mechanism for the coupling of phosphorylation to electron transport in both mitochondria and chloroplasts. Justifies the proposed reaction schemes in terms of thermodynamics and biochemical data. Suggests how areobic respiration could have evolved. (EB)

Metz, William D. – Science, 1975
Shortcomings of the usual definition of energy efficiency are identified. Suggestions are general for better use of fossil fuels. Studies done by the American Physics Society (APS) are discussed and recommendations made for an improved definition of energy efficiency are described. (Author/EB)

Levenspiel, Octave; de Nevers, Noel – Science, 1974
Describes the principle involved in an osmotic pump used to extract fresh water from the oceans and in an osmotic power plant used to generate electricity. Although shown to be thermodynamically feasible, the osmotic principle is not likely to be used commerically for these purposes in the near future. (JR)

Miller, William H. – Science, 1986
Discusses the role of semiclassical theory in chemical physics both as a computational method and conceptual framework for interpreting quantum mechanical experiments and calculations. Topics covered include energy wells and eigenvalues, scattering, statistical mechanics and electronically nonadiabiatic processes. (JM)
