Preschool Talent Assessment Guide.
Karnes, Merle B.; Taylor, Angela R.
This guide provides a set of qualitative and quantitative procedures and criteria for determining if a preschool handicapped child is talented in any of 6 areas: intellectual, academic, creative, leadership, visual and performing arts, and psychomotor. The guide developed by the RAPYHT project (a model program for Retrieval and Acceleration of Promising Young Handicapped and Talented), is also intended to be appropriate for assessing talent in non-handicapped preschoolers. The assessment procedures outlined are to be implemented following an initial talent screening. The first section of the guide briefly outlines follow-up procedures for gathering information from family members, teachers and school/social service personnel. The second section presents methods and instruments for assessing abilities in the 6 talent areas. The third section provides guidelines for determining the strength of the assessment evidence and making final program eligibility decisions. A sample talent staffing report is shown. Several tables are included to provide descriptive and scoring information on standardized tests for preschool children in the talent areas of intelligence, academic talent, creativity, leadership, and psychomotor talent. Also provided are the names and addresses of test publishers and a set of sample forms to aid in data collection and record-keeping. (RH)
