Jin, Kuan-Yu; Wang, Wen-Chung – Journal of Educational Measurement, 2014
Sometimes, test-takers may not be able to attempt all items to the best of their ability (with full effort) due to personal factors (e.g., low motivation) or testing conditions (e.g., time limit), resulting in poor performances on certain items, especially those located toward the end of a test. Standard item response theory (IRT) models fail to…

Smith, Ann; And Others – Measurement and Evaluation in Guidance, 1976
The effects of answer changes on test scores of relatively non-test-sophisticated examinees was studied. Findings showed that a significantly greater number of changes were from wrong to right, thus increasing total test scores. Answer-changing behavior may reflect more than learned test-taking skill. (Author)

Lord, Frederic M. – Journal of Educational Measurement, 1975
The assumption that examinees either know the answer to a test item or else guess at random is usually totally implausible. A different assumption is outlined, under which formula scoring is found to be clearly superior to number right scoring. (Author)

Sarnacki, Randolph E. – Review of Educational Research, 1979
The taxonomy of test wiseness constructed by Millman and others is discussed. Other aspects of test wiseness are reviewed, such as additional influencing factors, manifestations, theoretical approaches, correlates, measures, and methods of minimizing its effects. (MH)

Lynch, Daniel O.; Smith, Billie C. – 1972
Results of research conducted to ascertain the effect on test grades of changing answer choices are presented. The main questions that were examined were: (1) Does the changing of responses to test items (presumably based upon item reconsideration) result in better test scores?; (2) Is the amount of changes related to the score a person receives…

Hinrichsen, James J.; Stone, Lawrence – Journal of Personality Assessment, 1978
In order to assess the validity of the technique employed in selecting items for the Bem Sex Role Inventory (BSRI), 58 male and 62 female undergraduates took the BSRI under three different sets of instructions. The results support Bem's assertions that the scales are consistent with widely held sex-role stereotypes. (Author/CTM)

Huck, Schuyler W. – Journal of Educational Measurement, 1978
Providing examinees with advanced knowledge of the difficulty of an item led to an increase in test performance with no loss of reliability. This finding was consistent across several test formats. ( Author/JKS)
Descriptors: Difficulty Level, Feedback, Higher Education, Item Analysis
Garvin, Alfred D. – 1971
The objectives of this study were to ascertain the existence of any widely held, systematic sets in response position selection (RPS) and to evaluate the potential biasing effects of such sets on multiple choice and true-false test results. It is concluded that a sudden change in the accustomed pattern of keyed response positions can shift…

Landa, Suzanne – 1976
Instructions are provided on how to create and take computer aided admissible probability measurement (CAAPM) tests using programs available on PLATO IV. Admissible probability measurement is a testing procedure that permits a user to express a degree of uncertainty as to the correctness of alternative answers. Section II describes PLATO IV, an…

Gentry, Janine M.; Perry, James S. – 1993
This study examines the relationship between test-wiseness, memory, and grade-point average in college students. Test wiseness is defined as a subject's capacity to utilize the characteristics and format of a test to receive a higher score, independent of the examinee's knowledge of the subject matter. Researchers hypothesized that test-wiseness…

Bushnell, Don D. – 1978
To test the effects of altering situational variables in stressful examinations on high test anxious and low test anxious undergraduates, mid-terms and final examinations were administered in two environmental settings: large lecture halls and small language laboratories. Mean test scores for high test anxious students in the language labs were…

Shuford, Emir H., Jr.; Brown, Thomas A. – 1974
A student's choice of an answer to a test question is a coarse measure of his knowledge about the subject matter of the question. Much finer measurement might be achieved if the student were asked to estimate, for each possible answer, the probability that it is the correct one. Such a procedure could yield two classes of benefits: (a) students…

Tindal, Gerald; Fuchs, Lynn – 2000
This document summarizes the research on test changes to provide an empirical basis for defining accommodations for students with disabilities. It begins by providing an historical overview of special education accountability. It describes how separate special education accountability systems have evolved and summarizes information on the…
