Dewhurst, David – Humane Innovations and Alternatives in Animal Experimentation: A Notebook, 1990
Three interactive computer-assisted learning programs are described. The use of tissues from freshly killed frogs is simulated, including the isolated sciatic nerve, the sciatic nerve-gastrocnemius muscle, and the in situ heart. (KR)
Descriptors: College Science, Computer Assisted Instruction, Computer Simulation, Dissection

Rattan, Dick – Social Education, 1993
Reviews a HyperCard stack designed for use in schools and at home. Describes the program as primarily a database of information on Iraq, Kuwait, and the Gulf War. Contends that the program is pedagogically weak and of marginal use in the classroom. (CFR)
Descriptors: Computer Assisted Instruction, Computer Simulation, Databases, Foreign Countries

Kennedy, Kristin; Schumacher, Phyllis – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1993
Describes the use of simulation to introduce the bootstrapping technique of creating confidence intervals for the mean, median, and variance. These bootstrap confidence intervals are compared to the traditional confidence intervals for the purpose of analyzing accuracy of the technique. A Minitab program to produce confidence intervals is…

Lane, David M.; Tang, Zhihua – Journal of Educational Computing Research, 2000
The effectiveness of simulations for teaching statistical concepts was compared to the effectiveness of a textbook. Subjects were 115 college students. Subjects trained by simulation performed significantly better than those trained with a textbook. Results support the increasing use of simulation in education and training. (AEF)

Dickey, Michele D. – Interactive Learning Environments, 2005
Three-dimensional virtual worlds are an emerging medium currently being used in both traditional classrooms and for distance education. Three-dimensional (3D) virtual worlds are a combination of desk-top interactive Virtual Reality within a chat environment. This analysis provides an overview of Active Worlds Educational Universe and Adobe…

Corder, Greg – Science Teacher, 2005
Science teachers face challenges that affect the quality of instruction. Tight budgets, limited resources, school schedules, and other obstacles limit students' opportunities to experience science that is visual and interactive. Incorporating web-based Java applets into science instruction offers a practical solution to these challenges. The…

Zacharia, Zacharias – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 2003
The purpose of this study was to investigate (a) what effect the use of interactive computer-based simulations (ICBSs), the use of laboratory inquiry-based experiments (LIBEs), and the use of combinations of an ICBS and a LIBE, in a conceptually oriented physics course, have on science teachers' beliefs about and attitudes toward the use of these…

Larsen, Janet D.; Kozar, Brandon – Journal of Alcohol and Drug Education, 2005
The computer administered alcohol education program, Alcohol 101, is a popular tool for colleges attempting to foster more responsible drinking in college students. The effectiveness of this program in changing attitudes was assessed by measuring the attitudes of students who completed the program as one of the consequences of disciplinary action…

Nelson, Jorge O. – 1993
This paper presents a rationale for using high-fidelity computer simulation in planning for and implementing effective multicultural education strategies. Using computer simulation, educators can begin to understand and plan for the concept of cultural sensitivity in delivering instruction. The model promises to emphasize teachers' understanding…

Wresch, William – 1983
As drill and practice programs in computer assisted instruction (CAI) in English give students a chance to test their understanding and free the teacher from test grading, they seem a legitimate if unexciting use of the computer; but what seems less defensible is that, according to some estimates, 90% of available CAI software is of this drill and…

McGuire, George – 1983
Advantages of using the microcomputer as an interactive electronic blackboard are discussed, and programs and programming techniques are described to illustrate the construction, design, storage, and modification of colorful and animated graphic displays. The methods described are based on use of an Atari 800 microcomputer but could be used on…
Descriptors: Computer Assisted Instruction, Computer Graphics, Computer Simulation, Courseware
Atnip, Gilbert W. – 1985
This paper describes an undergraduate-level course designed to teach the applications of computers that are most relevant in the social sciences, especially psychology. After an introduction to the basic concepts and terminology of computing, separate units were devoted to word processing, data analysis, data acquisition, artificial intelligence,…

Armstrong, C. J. – Education for Information, 1984
Discusses motives behind development of teaching aids to introduce library science students to online searching, range of such aids the College of Librarianship Wales has developed, and describes a microcomputer package which comprises a computer assisted instruction module to familiarize students with DIALOG and an emulation which allows online…

Bowers, Janet; Nickerson, Susan – 2003
This paper reports on efforts to design a computer-based instructional unit for 7th grade students that would not only address state standards but would also provide some groundwork for the students' subsequent formal study of algebra. SimCalc Mathworlds software was used to explore the same motion from different perspectives. The overall…

Jackson, David F. – Journal of Science Education and Technology, 1997
Synthesizes the results of three case studies of middle school classrooms in which computer and video materials were used to teach topics in earth and space sciences through interactive simulations. Describes specific instances in which common current practice is problematic. Makes suggestions regarding improved design principles for such…
