Shim, Kew-Cheol; Park, Jong-Seok; Kim, Hyun-Sup; Kim, Jae-Hyun; Park, Young-Chul; Ryu, Hai-Il – Journal of Biological Education, 2003
Reports on the findings of a study designed to develop three-dimensional virtual reality technology (VRT) learning programs for middle school students and evaluate the program's educational value. Focuses on the topic of structure and function of the eye. Concludes that VRT simulations allow comfortable interaction with computers and increase the…

Chapman, Bryan L.; Allen, Rex J. – Journal of Interactive Instruction Development, 1994
Discusses a case study of a project created for the U.S. Air Force, Air Combat Command, in which mental models were taught, reinforced, and assessed as the foundation for instruction. Preliminary data for 183 students reflected a 93% mastery level and a 79% cumulative gain in students' ability to troubleshoot difficult problems. (Author/AEF)

do Couto Tavares, Milton; And Others – Physics Education, 1991
A mechanical analogy between the microscopic motion of a charged carrier in an ordinary resistor and the macroscopic motion of a ball falling along a slanted board covered with a lattice of nails is introduced. The Drude model is also introduced to include the case of inelastic collisions. Computer simulation of the motion is described. (KR)

Zawistowski, Stephen – Humane Innovations and Alternatives in Animal Experimentation: A Notebook, 1990
Described is the author's decision to help a student find alternatives to performing several terminal experiments on animals in a college physiology class. Replacement exercises used for studying the properties of muscle types are described. Details about the difficulties and successes of the entire experience are reported. (KR)
Descriptors: Animals, College Science, Computer Assisted Instruction, Computer Simulation

Acker, Loren E.; And Others – Teaching of Psychology, 1990
Discusses a microcomputer program that was created to simulate the behavior of a computerized "animal" so that students could practice the shaping of behavior. Describes mathematical algorithms that allowed the "animal" to show gradual improvements in directional movements after appropriate shaping. Reports that students were…

Buchanan, Judith Ann – Journal of Dental Education, 2001
Discusses the impact of current simulation laboratories on dental education and reviews advanced technology simulation that has recently become available or is in the developmental stage. Addresses the abilities of advanced technology simulation, its advantages and disadvantages, and its potential to affect dental education. (EV)

Stroup, Walter M. – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 2005
A critical issue related to the use of simulation environments in school-based learning is the relationship between the use of these environments and the structure of traditional curricula. Teachers are often caught in the bind of attempting to address significantly raised standards for what all students should know, yet receiving very little…

Alexiou, Antonios; Bouras, Christos; Giannaka, Eri; Kapoulas, Vaggelis; Nani, Maria; Tsiatsos, Thrasivoulos – Journal of Educational Multimedia and Hypermedia, 2004
This article presents Virtual Radiopharmacy Laboratory (VR LAB), a virtual laboratory accessible through the Internet. VR LAB is designed and implemented in the framework of the VirRAD European project. This laboratory represents a 3D simulation of a radio-pharmacy laboratory, where learners, represented by 3D avatars, can experiment on…

Lengwiler, Yvan – Journal of Economic Education, 2004
The author presents a computer game that puts the player in the role of a central bank governor. The game is a stochastic simulation of a standard reduced form macro model, and the user interacts with this simulation by manipulating the interest rate. The problem the player faces is in many ways quite realistic--just as a real monetary authority,…

Hirsch, L.; Saeedi, M.; Cornillon, J.; Litosseliti, L. – Journal of Computer Assisted Learning, 2004
This paper presents a structured environment for Computer-Supported Collaborative Argumentation, which we call the Argumentative Learning Experience (ALEX). The system aims to improve understanding of argumentation and to widen and deepen the space of debate among 16-18-year-old students. To use ALEX users make arguments by selecting and…

Casey, Amy C. – Teaching Music, 2005
The challenge for educators today is to overcome this barrage of media and technology and find innovative ways to help students learn. But, how can teachers compete for student attention when this is the challenge? How can they improve learning experiences and make them relevant to our students' lives? Integrating technology into the music…

Zacharia, Zacharias C. – International Journal of Science Education, 2005
This study investigated how individuals' construction of explanations--a way of ascertaining how well an individual understands a concept--develops from an interactive simulation. Specifically, the purpose was to investigate the effect of interactive computer simulations or science textbook assignments on the nature and quality of postgraduate…

Roper, Steven D. – Innovations in Education and Teaching International, 2004
Simulations can often be used to internationalize a course and even a curriculum. For faculty that teach international and comparative courses, simulations can often provide students with an opportunity to see beyond their own country. In developing a course on political revolutions, I created a simulation in which students role-played either a…

DeRoma, Virginia; Nida, Steve – TechTrends: Linking Research & Practice to Improve Learning, 2004
While advances in technology have enhanced the quality and variety of visual presentations in teaching, most instructors find themselves teaching to a generation of students who are difficult to dazzle. Although the innovative use of technology in and outside of the classroom is a challenge, selecting practices that optimize technology as a tool…
