Using Emotion Coaching to Promote Emotional Regulation for Young Children
Briana J. Williams; Lindsay Poole
Communique, v53 n1 p29-31 2024
While children receive most emotional messages from their caregivers, schools provide a unique opportunity to promote social-emotional competence. Early childhood educators and administrators should consider the long-term outcomes of incorporating SEL for young learners and school staff. One strategy to promote young students' social-emotional development is incorporating emotion coaching (EC) into educators' toolboxes. As young children make sense of the world, they look to adults and caregivers to understand and regulate in difficult situations, developing secure attachments to their environments and others around them. In schools, the EC approach uses four steps: (a) recognizing and validating the child's feelings, (b) labeling the feelings and validating, (c) setting limits on behavior, and (d) problem-solving with the child.
