The School Songbooks of Ransom Hubbard Randall (1847-1923)
Paul D. Sanders
Contributions to Music Education, v47 p105-127 2022
Following the American Civil War, several school music series were published to serve the needs of graded schools. These gradually became more popular than the single-volume songbooks previously used in public schools. Yet, school songbooks by Ransom Hubbard Randall and other authors continued to be used in the public schools as late as the 1920s. This study focuses on Randall's school songbooks, published between 1877 and 1906. Randall's songbooks were often designed to serve multiple purposes--music conventions, singing schools, singing classes, and teachers' institutes--as well as public schools, and many were quite popular. The Conqueror, which Randall co-authored with C.E. Leslie, purportedly sold over a million copies; Randall's The Key-Letter was reported to have been used in several high schools and normal schools; and Randall's Time and Tune appeared on Ohio's approved school textbook list as late as 1923. This study briefly summarizes the contents of Randall's songbooks, noting the most frequent song topics and drawing comparisons to other songbooks and series from this period.
