A Quantitative Predictive Study of Leadership Style and Technology Acceptance

The purpose of this quantitative, correlational predictive study was to determine if, and to what extent, scoring of an academic supervisor's transformational, transactional, or passive avoidant leadership by faculty members of regionally accredited four-year, degree-granting educational institutions across the United States separately predicts their behavioral intention to accept a change in technology caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The theoretical foundations for the study were the Full Range Leadership Model and the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology. Data were collected from 101 faculty members of regionally accredited universities across the United States through the Qualtrics survey service. One research question drove three hypotheses to determine if or to what extent individual leadership style predicted behavioral intention to use a technological change caused by COVID-19. Two valid and reliable quantitative instruments were used to gather data to measure leadership style (MLQ) and behavioral intention (UTAUT). Transactional leadership had a statistically significant relationship with behavioral intention, [beta] = 0.40, t = 2.55, p =0.01. Transformational leadership, [beta] = 0.14, t = 0.90, p =0.37, and passive avoidant leadership, [beta] = 0.13, t = 1.06, p =0.29, did not. The results indicated that transactional leadership predicts behavioral intention to use technological changes caused by the pandemic and suggests a need to stress the development of foundational active leadership traits.
