This book provides information to guide the development of an active learning early childhood program by assisting in the selection of materials and equipment to support children's cognitive, physical and social development. The guide considers the arrangement of classroom areas, and elements of the daily routine. The following classroom interest areas are covered: art area, block area, house area, toy area, book area, computer area, movement and music area, sand and water area, and woodworking area. The outdoor play areas are also discussed. The sections on each of these areas include suggestions for locating and planning the area and a list of suggested materials and equipment, with quantities specified. The guide concluded with sample diagrams of three typical classrooms. The guide offers suggestions for selecting culturally appropriate materials, for prioritizing, arranging, acquiring and supplementing materials in each area. (JPB)
