Athletes Score a Hit with Kids in Grades Four through Eight.

To influence children in deciding not to smoke, a program, Wisconsin Athletes Against Cancer, was designed and implemented in grades four through eight. Athletes served as role models and delivered anti-smoking messages. Athlete preparation, the presentation format, and feedback and evaluation methods are discussed. (JN)

Culturally Relevant Smoking Prevention for Minority Youth.

A rap contest methodology for smoking prevention was tested with 10-14 year olds in a predominantly minority school district. Contests occurred after initial assemblies where students heard and viewed taped peer antismoking rap messages. Winning students received $25. Pre- and posttesting indicated high preference ratings for the intervention. (SM)

HIV Education Practices and Training Needs of Middle School and High School Teachers.

A statewide survey of secondary school teachers examined the scope of HIV education they provided and training needs they perceived. Questionnaire data indicated 75% taught HIV education. Most were self-trained, felt uncomfortable, wanted more training, and perceived others to be supportive. Middle school teachers faced the most barriers. (SM)
