An Annotated Bibliography of the Literature Dealing with the Question of Whether Teachers as Professionals Are Justified in Striking to Achieve Their Goals.

Literature concerning teachers' right to strike was reviewed. Three major themes were addressed: (1) the present state of arguments against teacher strikes; (2) their refutation by various individuals within the profession; and (3) arguments that were basic in demonstrating that the preponderance of evidence has shifted to the inevitable acceptance of strikes to aid teachers in achieving their goals. A glossary of relevant terms preceded an annotated bibliography of 32 citations from journals and books. The annotations are divided into four sections: (1) "Is It Unprofessional to Strike?"; (2) "Is Unionism and Militancy Justified?"; (3) "Are Students the Real Victims of Strikes?"; and (4) "What Are the Legal and Moral Ramifications of Strikes?" It is concluded that public school teacher strikes can be justified. The concluding biliography also serves as an author index to the works annotated in this document. (CB)
