An Analysis of the Conflicts in the Student Teacher and Cooperating Teacher Relationship
Heather Vezner
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northeastern University
The student teacher (ST) and cooperating teacher (CT) relationship is a key element in a productive practicum experience. A strained relationship inhibits learning, creates stress, and can lead to discontinuing the placement. The purpose of this action research study is to understand the conflicts that occur in the ST and CT relationship during the final semester of student teaching, and develop action steps that will help build a positive, learning relationship. Cycle I data consisted of interviews with four STs and two CTs, and a survey completed by eight STs and nine CTs from a teacher preparation program at a small, private university. Several themes around conflict emerged: CT style, quality of feedback, setting expectations, and building a trusting relationship. After a review of Cycle I results, action steps were developed to help build a positive relationship, set expectations and provide quality feedback. Action steps included a presentation at the ST Orientation to give STs information on areas of potential conflict, a Guided Weekly Reflection (GWR) activity for STs and CTs to open communication and build a relationship; and a community of practice (COP) support group to provide STs a safe setting for reflective conversations to process the experience. Cycle II data collection included interviews with eight STs and five CTs, surveys completed by 26 STs and 15 CTs and a review of completed GWRs. Findings concluded that the ST Orientation was minimally effective, the GWR helped facilitate structured opportunities for communication and relationship building, and the ST COP was a positive experience for STs, although attendance was minimal. Implications for the organization include continued use of the GWR, training for CTs on building a trusting relationship, and required COP participation by STs.
