Winning the Recruitment Game: A Multiple Case Study of Teacher Candidate Job Choice Factors and How They Can Impact Recruitment Efforts in Rural Districts
Ashley J. Carlson
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Aurora University
Teacher quality has been proven one of the greatest factors leading to student success (Stronge, Ward, Tucker, & Hindman 2011; Hattie 2003). However, hiring high quality teachers has become increasingly difficult in rural districts. The purpose of this qualitative multi-case study was to gain insights into preferences and perceptions of initial licensure candidates as they go through the hiring process. Through in-depth semi-structured interviews with five initial licensure candidates, this study determined primary factors considered when candidates decided where to apply, and primary factors considered when ultimately deciding where to take their first job. Major thematic findings are discussed including implications of student debt and moving back home, teacher pay, the uncertainty of their first year of teaching, and a desire to work in a place where existing connections and relationships already exist. Recommendations are made for school districts to improve and better target recruitment efforts. Ideas for further research are also presented.?.
