The use of braille as the primary means of achieving literacy among the blind and severely visually impaired has lessened in recent years. Synthetic speech and talking books have taken the place of braille as the primary sources of information. Some reasons for the lack of growth in readership are failure to produce those materials most wanted by the population served, the uneven quality of instruction in braille, the lack of technology in braille text production, and the complexity of the braille code. Solutions to these problems are to change the public attitudes through an international conference and a series of articles on braille, to define the market and enhance availability, to standardize criteria for teacher competence and conduct management audits, introduce innovative methods of production, and to revise the braille code.
