Kids Count New Jersey 1998: State and County Profiles of Child Well-Being.
Hernandez, Eloisa
This Kids Count report provides information on state and countywide trends in the well-being of New Jersey's children between 1990 and 1998. The statistical portrait is based on 19 social indicators: (1) children receiving AFDC/TANF; (2) children receiving food stamps; (3) children receiving Medicaid; (4) Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program enrollees; (5) number of births; (6) percent of births with low birth weight; (7) percent of births receiving no prenatal care; (8) infant mortality rates; (9) number of births to teens; (10) child death rates; (11) teen death rates; (12) juvenile arrest rates; (13) juvenile commitment rates; (14) child abuse; (15) family problems; (16) out of home placements; (17) percent of students scoring level 3 (not proficient) on the reading, writing, and mathematics sections of the Early Warning Test; (18) percentage of 11th grade students passing the state's high school proficiency test; and (19) percent of students taking the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) and their average math and reading scores. Following the state profile, the report presents profiles for each county, then presents the data by indicator for each county. The remainder of the report presents profiles for selected New Jersey cities. A glossary is included. The report shows improvement since 1990 in indicators of economic well being and of child health, but the rate of teen deaths has increased, as have the number of juvenile arrests and commitments. Child welfare indicators also show improvement since 1993. (HTH)
