This package is intended to assist tutors who are working to improve their adult students' writing skills. It is divided into three parts. The first part, which focuses on the process of writing, includes 13 units in which tutors can explore writing work, either with small groups or individual students. The units, each of which includes transcripts from tapes and a discussion point, deal with the following aspects of the writing process: going from talk to writing, warming up, catching words, reading back, making suggestions to help others rewrite, rewriting one's own work, planning, choosing, recognizing that there are different types of English, writing together, writing for different purposes, writing for other people, and reviewing different types of writing achievements. The second part of the pack contains two longer discussions. The first raises some issues about language and learning, and the second deals with the special role of the tutor in a group of people who are working at improving their writing. The third part, which is called "Themes and Beginnings," contains suggestions for using personal incidents, feelings, learning experiences, and escapes and changes as bases for developing written work and includes a section on the importance of focus to good writing. The final part deals with other forms of expression--photography, tape-slide presentations, and video; reviews the theory behind the pack; and includes a list of further readings and contacts. (MN)
