A Phenomenological Study of First-Generation Graduates Using Supplemental Programs and Services
Tameica U. Jones
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, North Greenville University
First-generation college students are a diverse at-risk population and have continued to face challenges obtaining 4-year degrees. Access to postsecondary education has increased for first generation students. Academic and social programs and services at four-year institutions such as first-year seminars, summer bridge programs, service learning, and learning communities are used to integrate and retain students during and after their first year. TRIO Programs are signature programs that address first-generation students' academic and social needs at certain post-secondary institutions. In this qualitative study, the supplemental programs and services used by first-generation college graduates to ensure they obtained their degrees were investigated. Using a phenomenological design, this study attempts to determine what supplemental programs and services help first-generation students persist beyond year one. Twenty first-generation college graduates discussed their successes with, perceptions of, and attitudes about supplemental programs and services in a semi-structured interview. The results indicated that students use orientation seminars, academic advising, internships, and career services to help them persist to reach their goals. Participants' motivation and support systems were key to navigating the college experience. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
