This study sought to conduct an assessment of a transfer retention program at a four year, commuter institution, and to examine its influence on the retention and academic performance of transfer students. A mixed methods case study utilizing both institutional quantitative data and qualitative interviews investigated the influence of this program on the success of the participating transfer students. Findings from the study showed that participating students performed academically better and persisted longer than students who did not participate in this program. Analysis of student interviews revealed that the retention program was designed in a manner that was cognizant of transfer student needs. Additional findings noted that students' internal motivation to succeed, socio-economic status and family support also played a role in contributing to their success. This study reflects a connection with and also helps to advance current student development theories. Implications from this study can help similar institutions improve the success rates of their transfer students.
