The article reviews the history and current status of research and programing in special education in the Ukrainian SSR. Among topics addressed are parallels with the United States in categories of exceptionality and assessment practices. (CL)

The so-called pedology movement was replaced in the 1930s by an anti-testing policy, followed more recently by a reassessment of psychodiagnostic practices.
