The Relationship between Prayer Frequency, Intellectual Humility, and Select Demographic Variables of SBC Seminary Students
Puryear, Joshua
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary
The purpose of this descriptive, quantitative study was to determine whether any relationship exists between prayer frequency, intellectual humility, and select demographic variables of current SBC seminary students. Prior research related to prayer in the U.S. has shown that the higher an individual's level of education, the lower their frequency is in prayer (Baker, 2008; "Frequency of Prayer," 2014; "Silent and Solo," 2017). The aim of the current research was to examine if this trend held true among current SBC seminary students and if their level of intellectual humility impacted prayer frequency. An analysis of 1,346 survey responses revealed multiple statistically significant relationships that impacted time spent in prayer. These included individuals' age, GPA, ministry status, ministry context, ministry experience, student status, and degree program classification. Individuals who had a prayer mentor, as well as those who had received prayer training through a local church, prayed significantly more than their counterparts. A significant relationship was also found between one's level of intellectual humility as dependent upon their time spent in prayer.
