The Impact of PBIS on the Number of Out-of-School Suspensions in the Three Southern Public-School Districts

ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Saint Leo University
This study examines whether Positive Behavior Interventions can support student performance in schools in three Southern districts. Schools today seek opportunities for interventions to support student behaviors and increase engagement. Three school districts in the southeast of the United States have been trained to implement a schoolwide Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS) framework to mitigate challenging behaviors that lead to out-of-school suspensions. The following research questions drive this qualitative research: (1) What impact did PBIS have on the number of out-of-school suspensions in three southern public-school districts? (2) What are teachers' perceptions about the implementation of PBIS? This mixed-method study collects data through publicly available discipline data from three public school districts in the southern region and online surveys distributed to teachers who are implementing PBIS in these same districts.
