Program Monitoring Process Evaluation of a K-12 Threat Assessment Program
Kate Shaw
ProQuest LLC, Psy.D. Dissertation, Alliant International University
This research seeks to evaluate the implementation and effectiveness of a behavioral threat assessment and management (BTAM) program within the Mansfield Independent School District, catering to students from kindergarten through 12th grade. The primary focus of the BTAM initiative is to detect early signs of potential violence in students' behavior, thereby enabling timely intervention to mitigate the threat of such incidents. Initiated in February of the 2021-2022 academic year and reaching full operational status upon the completion of necessary staff training by September of the 2022-2023 academic year, the program's evaluation aimed to verify its efficacy in training educators and staff to identify, report, and address behaviors indicative of a risk to school safety effectively. This evaluation underscores the critical role of monitoring and assessment of the program's deployment in enhancing its overall success and impact. The results of this research indicate favorable outcomes from the deployment of the BTAM program within the MISD. The increase in the number of behavioral cases reported, coupled with a reduction in the time taken to report such incidents and enhanced early detection of potential threats, underscores the program's effectiveness in promoting a proactive and supportive environment for managing potential threats. Challenges encountered reflect the intricate nature of comprehensively assessing BTAM programs and highlight the necessity for ongoing research to navigate these obstacles. Ultimately, this study serves as a foundational step for further investigations and assessments of BTAM initiatives, contributing to the broader goal of safeguarding the safety and well-being of students across kindergarten to 12th grade educational environments.
