Undergraduate Student Experiences at an Elite Institution during the COVID-19 Pandemic: Financial Support, Housing, and Online Learning
Cheryl Rose Nelson
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Stanford University
This qualitative study explores the experiences of undergraduate students attending an elite private university during the COVID-19 pandemic. Using interview data from 62 participants, I examine the impact of online learning, living environment, and additional financial aid. I first explore how additional financial resources provided by the university impacted the development of social capital for students attending the university, particularly those in remote settings. Second, I look at how student experiences in on-campus housing during the pandemic impacted their sense of belonging at the institution. I then examine students' sense of belonging in the context of online learning during the pandemic. I conclude with a discussion of implications and future research directions.
