Examining Online Student Services: An Exploration of the RN-BSN Student Experience
Staci L. Hunt
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northern Kentucky University
This quantitative study intended to assess the overall effectiveness of online student services at Northern Kentucky University as perceived by students in the online accelerated RN-BSN program. The awareness, ease of access, utilization, and perceived value of academic advising, tutoring, and technological (IT) services were specifically examined. The purpose of this study was to provide insight as to whether online student services needed to be augmented in order to better serve the population. Students were administered a Qualtrics survey during the second seven-week session during Summer 2024. More students were aware of academic advising and IT services than tutoring services, and of those that were aware, most found them accessible- though few used them every seven-week session. If students were aware of a service but did not use them, they tended to indicate that they just did not need the service, or that they received help from classmates, friends, or family members. This population does not utilize, nor do they feel the need to utilize online services with the frequency that the researcher assumed. Further study of other student populations across both exclusively online as well as hybrid programs across campus throughout the full academic year is needed to have a clearer lens of the effectiveness of online student services at NKU.
