Schoolwide Restorative Practices: A Mixed-Methods Study to Observe Positive Trends in the Perception of Staff and Students on School Connectedness and the Use of Restorative Practices
Jolene Burdick
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Concordia University Irvine
The purpose of this convergent parallel design, mixed methods case study, was to discover the perception of students and teachers of the effectiveness of using school-wide restorative practices for students at the middle school level, grades six through eight, at one middle school site. Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs was the Theoretical Framework used as a lens to determine what students need to be successful. The research focused on looking for positive trends in the connectedness of staff and students and their overall perception of restorative practices. A Likert-style survey was given to 29 participants who were teachers who had been at the school site for the entirety of the case study, from Spring 2022 through Fall 2023. Participants also included students at the school site, grades six through eight, who participated in the Panorama Social Emotional Learning Survey that is given out to the district twice every school year. The results of the study showed positive trends in the perception of staff and students concerning school connectedness after the implementation of restorative practices. Future research is needed at multiple school sites and grade levels to see the benefits of implementation in various school settings.
