ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, The Claremont Graduate University
Technostress is a phenomenon that exists in the workplace and it impacts the work performance in positively and negatively. Previous research introduced the concept of "Technostress" which it is the stress that result from intense technology usage. Technostress has five sources of stress and they are techno-overload, techno-insecurity, techno-uncertainty, techno-complexity, and techno- invasion. A case study was conducted to explore the concept of technostress in ABC University in Saudi Arabia by interviewing employees and managers in different departments at ABC University. The goal of this case study was to (a) build a model that describes the phenomenon, (b) explore the concept of Technostress to better explain the impact of Technostress in the workplace on employees' job performance, (c) reveal complexity by assessing the work environment in ABC University through employee and employer interviews. Unstructured interview questions were used for the purpose of interviewing managers at ABC University and semi-structured interview questions were used to interview employees in this research project. Some interviewees agreed to write a few sentences about their daily technology experiences in the workplace for three consecutive working days, to help in understanding the negative and positive effects of technostress and technology usage in the workplace. The study found a new source of stress that can be generated from using technology in the workplace and it was added to the Technostress Model. The study revealed a new source of Technostress that is generated from the analysis of the interviews called "techno-inefficiency" and it is defined as it occurs when users feel uncomfortable using a system due to slowness, low quality, and high numbers of alerts in the system. The study also revealed that techno-insecurity is not a major source of stress in the ABC University due to the high level of job security.
