This document details the progress made toward achieving the eight National Education Goals. The Goals 2000: Educate America Act marked its first year with school-improvement plans in 47 states and $85 million in the hands of state and local school districts. The publication contains: (1) a list of the National Education Goals; (2) a description of state and federal commitments in the new partnership; (3) a list of Goals 2000 subgrant awards; (4) a list of Goals 2000 state grant awards; (5) a description of strategies from eight states for advancing state and local reform efforts, promoting challenging academic standards, increasing community participation in education, giving educators access to educational tools, and encouraging flexible and responsible schools; (6) a map of participating states; and (7) answers to misconceptions about Goals 2000.
