Understanding the Faith Development of Modern Orthodox Jewish College Students Who Attended Gap Year Religious Studies Programs
Jonathan B. Schwab
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, New York University
Faith development in college students constitutes an important topic in higher education research, and Modern Orthodox Jewish college students are a small but particularly under-studied group of college-goers. Using a qualitative phenomenological approach, this study explored how Modern Orthodox Jewish college students understood their religious identities before and during college. Participants who engaged in full-time religious study for one or more years prior to college were interviewed across three college sites. Interviews were transcribed and coded, with codes grouped into clusters of meaning and themes. These themes are discussed with subthemes and examples and are compared to existing models of faith development, with revisions suggested for those models in this population. Implications are discussed for educators in multiple settings: Modern Orthodox high schools and gap year programs, and higher education, offices of religious life and student affairs.
