A Journey into the Science of Reading -- Part 2 of 2
Tori Virlee; Erin Hardin; Chelsea McKinlay
Montessori Life: A Publication of the American Montessori Society, v36 n1 p32-42 2024
In our first article, we outlined some of the reasons for reading failure at the Early Childhood level and beyond, discussed common challenges students face, and explored essential components for quality reading instruction. We'll revisit the students you met in the first article to provide a window into how the Science of Reading can be incorporated into the Early Childhood classroom. We'll introduce new strategies and materials that integrate best practices through a Montessori lens for all learners. We'll show how these same strategies and materials can become interventions when used with increased intensity, frequency, and differentiation. Core Montessori principles, such as independence, multisensory instruction, and isolation of difficulty, remain central elements of the lesson.
