Wayte, Rosemary F.; Oschner, Glenda J. – 1978
The paper uses a case study of a 10-year-old hearing impaired child to describe an articulation program for the hard of hearing which is characterized as a multiphonemic, sound/symbol, expressively-based approach. Reviewed are the Multiphonemic Sequencing system's six major components: target phoneme selection, associations, synthesis, analysis,…

Costello, Janis – Language, Speech, and Hearing Services in Schools, 1975
Advocated is a system of articulation instruction based on choosing a distinctive feature, as opposed to a single phoneme, as the remediation target, and outlined are measurement steps for the selection of target phonemes for treatment. (LS)

Blanchard, Irene – The American Journal of Nursing, 1963
Man uses essentially the same structures for eating as he does for speaking. Speech, however, is accomplished by elaborating upon the basic ingestion functions of these structures. It is theorized that the appropriate and efficient use of these motile organs in eating should lead eventually to more appropriate and efficient patterns of speech. For…

Clase, June M. – 1969
The major purposes of this study were: (1) to determine whether deviant articulation interferes with communication, (2) to determine whether deviant articulation is negatively evaluated, and (3) to determine whether clinicians and laymen differ significantly in their response to deviant articulation. Four groups were formed by randomly assigning…

Matheny, Nancy; Panagos, John M. – Language, Speech, and Hearing Services in Schools, 1978

Young, Edna Carter – Language, Speech, and Hearing Services in Schools, 1987
In a multiple baseline across behaviors design, two 4-year-old children with articulation errors were trained to suppress the phonological processes of weak syllable reduction and consonant cluster reduction. Results indicated that the treatment was effective and that training generalized to phonetically similar untrained words. (Author/DB)

McReynolds, Leija V.; Jetzke, Elaine – Journal of Speech and Hearing Disorders, 1986
A study explored the effect of training in pairs of voiced or voiceless sounds on 6- to 13-year-old prelingually deaf (N=8) children's generalization to cognates. Results showed that six of the eight children generalized both the voiced and unvoiced target sounds to 50 percent or more of the target sound probe items. (Author/CB)

Schissel, Richard J.; Doty, Marilyn H. – Language, Speech, and Hearing Services in Schools, 1979
Articulation test performance following nine testing sessions and 14 therapy sessions indicated mastery of all but two of the original error sounds. It was concluded that the technique of treating all production errors in each remediation session can be a rapid and effective procedure with children displaying multiple sound errors. (DLS)

Onslow, Mark; And Others – Journal of Speech and Hearing Research, 1996
The speech of 12 adults in prolonged speech treatment was assessed prior to treatment and after discharge. Results showed that stuttering was eliminated without using unusually slow or unnatural speech patterns, and many clients maintained stutter-free speech at high rates of speech. Speech rate correlated to perceived posttreatment speech…

Kamhi, Alan G. – Language, Speech, and Hearing Services in Schools, 2000
This article uses a case study to suggest that some children view speech-language therapy as a separate situation for learning practicing new sounds and language forms whereas the purpose of talking outside of therapy is meaningful communication. Clinical implications of this potential incompatibility between practicing speech and communicating…
