"If We Don't Say It …Nobody's Gonna Even Think about It": An Examination of LGBT+ Members in Historically Black Sororities
Williams, Yolanda Vivian
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Indiana State University
This qualitative study explored the experiences of LGBQ+ members in historically Black sororities and how these members navigate sexual orientation, gender identity and/or gender expression in their organizations. This study was guided by the following research question: What are the lived experiences of LGBQ+ members in historically Black sororities? A qualitative research method using both a narrative and case study strategies allowed me to gain understanding and perspective from each participant on their own lived experiences. To help shape the 16 participants' stories, a series of questions was asked that not only centered around how they navigate their sexuality within their sisterhood but also asked fundamental questions about their childhood, education, and personal lives (i.e., relationships). The results of this study reveal that sorority attire, being oneself, suffering sorority trauma, having a welcoming sisterhood, encountering bad advisors, observing toxic masculinity, navigating intergenerational beliefs in their sisterhoods, and combatting negative social media all affect their experience as an LGBQ+ member in a historically Black Sorority. It is recommended that HBSs should immediately implement systemic changes that include recognition and acknowledgement of LGBQ/SGL members, past, present, and future; reconciliation actions for past harms; create policies and practices to ensure future change; and require inclusion of LGBTQ+ knowledge and awareness in programs and platforms.
