Strategies to Potentially Maintain Financial Sustainability at a Small, Private, Nonprofit Higher Education Institution: An Action Research Study
Robert L. Totino
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northeastern University
Alignment of revenues and expenses at small, private, nonprofit colleges and universities is a growing challenge for leadership at these institutions. The purpose of this action research study was to investigate what strategies the researcher's university has implemented to potentially lead itself to financial sustainability. Participants and data collected in Cycle 1 consisted of interviews with nine members of leadership comprised of members of the board, administrators, and faculty as well as examination of quantitative information summarizing enrollment and classroom utilization rates and the cost to educate a student by program at Stallion University. An action step was designed, implemented, and evaluated in Cycle 2. Two sessions comprising nine Cycle 2 participants were delivered in an online modality leading to the co-creation of several financial dashboards. Collaborators provided critical feedback that assisted the evaluation process. Dashboards have the ability to inform a stakeholder community regarding direction on potential financial successes and headwinds as well as adapting and diversifying all facets of the university in an everchanging higher education industry. Findings centered on the adoption of shared governance among members of leadership are essential to building a strong organizational foundation, the co-creation of dashboards as tools of communication with internal stakeholders, diversification of methodologies to uncover new revenue streams or savings efficiencies, and strategizing ways to differentiate from competitors in a crowded higher education landscape. Implications for the institution included financial sustainability in the short and long-term, and remaining a going concern.
