DesRochers, Jacob – Sex Education: Sexuality, Society and Learning, 2022
This paper identifies some of the methodological considerations involved in narrative research with conservative faith groups, while addressing the things left unsaid through an exploration of silence in the author's own life narrative of faith and sexuality. The challenges posed by silence -- temporal silence and concealment -- require greater…

Peterson, Amy J.; Silver, Gillian K.; Bell, Heather A.; Guinosso, Stephanie A.; Coyle, Karin K. – American Journal of Sexuality Education, 2023
This synthesis of 30 qualitative studies examined young people's views on pornography related to their sexual health. Synthesis revealed pornography use is considered normal by young people, reinforced by its usefulness as a tool for pleasure, information, and instruction in the absence of sufficient sexuality education. However, youth can become…

Sitter, Kathleen C.; Burke, Amy C.; Ladhani, Sheliza; Mallay, Nicole – British Journal of Learning Disabilities, 2019
Background: Although sexual rights are human rights, persons with developmental disabilities are often excluded from developing positive sexual health due to societal attitudes, stigma, a lack of education and limited opportunities. Methods: As a part of a 12-month participatory action research study in a western Canadian province, nine adults…

Gannon, Susanne; Walsh, Susan; Byers, Michele; Rajiva, Mythili – International Journal of Qualitative Studies in Education (QSE), 2014
This paper proposes a new move in the methodological practice of collective biography, by provoking a shift beyond any remnant attachment to the speaking/writing subject towards her dispersal and displacement via textual interventions that stress multivocality. These include the use of photographs, drama, and various genres of writing. Using a…

Harris, Frank, III; Harper, Shaun R. – International Journal of Qualitative Studies in Education (QSE), 2014
Research on fraternity men focuses almost exclusively on problematic behaviors such as homophobia and sexism, alcohol abuse, violence against women, sexual promiscuity, and the overrepresentation of members among campus judicial offenders. Consequently, little is known about those who perform masculinities in healthy and productive ways. Presented…

Gosse, Douglas – Education Canada, 2012
Stubborn societal prejudices persist that inhibit this enlargement of gender roles for boys and men. Portrayals of men in popular culture tend to be brutish, ignorant, and violent--often in sexual and predatory ways. Boys in school are subjected to homophobia, racism, classism, and shame, as a means of policing their burgeoning identities and…

Bazzul, Jesse; Sykes, Heather – Cultural Studies of Science Education, 2011
While education communities have well defined commitments to protect their learners from oppressive instructional materials, discourses of science education are often left unexamined. This analysis/critique employs queer theory as a perspective to look at how one widely used textbook in Ontario schools conceptualizes notions of gender and…

Kehler, Michael – McGill Journal of Education, 2010
Disturbed by a proliferation of quick-fix literacy strategies to "help the boys" increase achievement levels in the midst of a policy shift that acknowledges gay, lesbian, bi and transgender, questioning (GLBTQ) youth, the author examines how masculinities are connected to literacy practices and negotiated through a safe school policy.…

Khayatt, Didi – McGill Journal of Education, 2006
This paper examines the interplay between gender and sexuality. In particular, it looks at some reasons why mainstream society cannot bear homosexuality, or any expression of resistance to heteronormativity. The paper also considers what makes schools particularly hostile to teaching or tolerating deviance from set notions of essentialized and…

Lunsky, Yona; Konstantareas, M. Mary – Education and Training in Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities, 1998
A study compared sociosexual attitudes of 31 adults with developmental disability, 15 with autism, and 16 with mental retardation, and 25 typical Canadians and 28 Americans. Most differences were contributed by the individuals with mental retardation who endorsed significantly fewer than 50% of sexual activities presented. (Author/CR)

Larkin, June; Andrews, Amy; Mitchell, Claudia – Sex Education: Sexuality, Society and Learning, 2006
This paper takes up the concern that sexual health programs targeting adolescents may actually increase HIV risk among youth by reinforcing dominant versions of masculinity that portray males as sexually irresponsible and unconcerned about their health. If a key aim in HIV prevention education is a renegotiation of high-risk behavioral norms, an…
