The Lived Experiences of Young Black Male Counselors
Jamal Travis Boudion
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, University of Holy Cross
Black men are underrepresented in the counseling profession, but they are more in demand than ever. When counselors reflect the demographics of their clients, they establish an unspoken kinship. It is a daily fight for men, particularly Black men, to acknowledge their feelings and emotions, to appear sensitive, or to exhibit "weakness." Society believes that men should work as truck drivers, athletes, construction workers, and electricians, among other occupations. Despite the fact that the counseling profession was founded by White men, counseling is portrayed as a feminist profession. Not only is it challenging to be a Black male in America, but it is also difficult to be a young Black male in America. For this study, I conducted interviews with young Black male counselors. The objective was to develop a better understanding of their experiences. The themes I identified after interviewing the participants were loneliness and isolation, rewarding and fulfilling, confidence, supportive family and friends, and emotional responses due to COVID-19 and Black Lives Matter. The results of my study may assist universities in determining how to retain young Black male counselors in counseling graduate programs, in developing the most effective strategies for teaching this nontraditional population of students, and in implementing strategies to help young Black male counselors understand the significance of their role in the profession.
